Hello, lovely human! My name is Barbara and I love great books, my sewing machine, home-made meals and beautiful views. When I’m not enjoying any of these, I earn my living helping people become more confident and content in their everyday lives. Because yes, people take language classes to be more confident and content – to speak at work, travel, connect with others, read more books, watch more films and have access to more information. In my eight years as an English and French teacher, I’ve supported people in all kinds of situations—presenting in English in front of a full conference hall, speaking to English-speaking family members, getting an internship at an embassy in Paris, overcoming a fear of speaking a foreign language, or getting a promotion at work. I love languages, but passion alone isn’t enough to be a great teacher; it requires some professional skills too. I’ve acquired mine studying a Master’s Degree in Teaching English and French, obtaining a TEFL certificate and passing a language coaching course. My thesis and research involved studying the English phonetic system and accent reduction. I wrote a specialised pronunciation textbook and I’ve taught Phonetics and Phonology at university. Pssst—my guilty pleasure is secretly identifying people’s nationalities based on their accent, correcting their pronunciation mistakes and thinking of ways of improvement. Luckily, there are people who ask me to do it, pay me for it and are actually very happy about it! Let me know if there’s something I can help you with. Something… For example your accent :-)

Sometimes, you don’t want this part of your identity to stand in the way of landing a great job, getting a promotion, securing your dream apartment, or simply being understood by others. I can help you with that. My pronunciation lessons are tailored to your specific accent, so you’ll only practise what’s relevant and useful to you. Here’s how it works: 1. Accent diagnostic: We’ll start by identifying the features of your speech that contribute to your accent. 2. Personalised syllabus: Based on the diagnostic, I’ll create a customised plan focused on improving those aspects. 3. Specialised techniques: In our sessions, we’ll use targeted methods to replace your old pronunciation habits with new ones. We’ll work on facial muscle movement, sound placement, articulation, and voice pitch to help you sound more like a native English speaker. 4. Daily practice: The work doesn’t end with our lessons. I’ll equip you with daily techniques to continue improving your pronunciation on your own. *Please note, I specialise in Modern RP (Received Pronunciation) or Standard Southern British English (SSBE). If you’re looking to develop a General American accent, my course won’t be the right fit.* This course is ideal for: - professionals aiming for career advancement - job seekers - students or academics - actors or public speakers - English teachers - people facing accent discrimination
